Woman in wheelchair hit by car in Newport News

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — A woman in a wheelchair was injured early Tuesday morning after police say she was hit by a car.

Newport News police say officers responded to Saunders Road around 12:25 a.m. A 67-year-old Newport News woman was lying in a drainage ditch when officers arrived.

Police say she had cuts on her face as well as bruises.

The woman told police she was going south on Saunders Road in her motorized wheelchair when was hit from behind.

Police say an investigation found the impact knocked her — and her wheelchair — forward 20 feet, causing her to fall from the chair and into the ditch.

She was taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center in stable condition.
